When you think about going green, do you automatically think
of expensive projects such as installing solar panels in your home or
purchasing an electric car? If so, you are not alone. Many people think that it
will cost them money to go green; however, that is just not the case. In fact,
there are many lifestyle changes that you can make which are both
environmentally friendly and free. This means that you do not have to go broke
in order to do your part to help preserve the environment. Let’s take a look at
five things that you can do for free to become more eco-friendly.
Don’t Buy Bottled Water
May people purchase bottled water for convenience without
giving a second thought to where all of those plastic bottles will end up. You
can easily purchase a water bottle made from recycled materials to replace all
of those plastic bottles; and it will also save you money as well. Bottled
water can often be costly, save money by using a reusable water bottle instead.
Donate Your Electronics
Many electronics are valuable even if they are in
non-working condition. If you have electronics lying around that are not being
used do not throw them away; instead consider donating them instead. There are
many electronic recycling programs out there as well which will allow you to
drop off used or non-working electronics for free. You may even be able to make
a few dollars by donating to a consignment shop in your area.
Do Not Waste Gas
Cars powered by gasoline are the top pollutant around the
world. For this reason, you want to make sure that you are not doing more
driving than you need to. You can do your part to reduce this pollution by
combining your errands, carpooling or taking public transportation when you
can. When you do have to drive be conscious of this by turning off the engine
when you are going to be idle for more than 60 seconds. Keep your load as light
as possible and use cruise control when you can to help decrease the amount of
pollution your vehicle creates.
Quit Buying Paper Towels
Paper towels are not only expensive, but they are often
thrown away with very little using adding to the overwhelming amount of garbage
winding up in landfills today. With paper towels costing an average of $1 per
and most consumers using two rolls power week; you can save as much as $200 per
year simply by switching from paper towels to hand towels. It is much more
earth friendly to wash your hand towels regularly then it is to use wasteful
paper towels.
Wash in Cold Water
Although many people do not think that you can wash your
clothes in cold water and still get them clean; this is not true. You can cut
down on your energy use and still enjoy clean freshly laundered clothes by
simply changing the dial on your washing machine. This is one environmentally
friendly option that is not only free; it can actually save you money on your
energy bills.
